Continuing Professional Education Information
Continuing Professional Education (CPE) is mandatory for all Texas educators. This page provides information on how Texas educators can obtain CPE credit.
Obtaining Continuing Professional Education Credit
If you have a standard certificate in Texas, you must renew it every five years. You must earn a minimum number of CPE hours through an approved CPE provider to renew your certificate (TAC §232.13). New CPE Standards for certain positions are available below:
All CPE providers must be approved and registered by the State Board of Education and the Texas Education Agency. You can download a List of CPE providers approved by TEA (Excel) For more information, please see the Frequently Asked Questions (Word, 17.6 KB) document.
You must maintain written documentation of all CPE required activities (TAC §232.23(a)). You can use the following worksheets to organize documentation:
-
Classroom Teachers (PDF, 190.19 KB)
-
Principals and Superintendents (PDF, 188.77 KB)
-
Master Teachers, and Student Services (PDF, 190.43 KB)
Documentation of CPE Provider Activities
All Continuing Professional Education (CPE) providers must create their own documentation system (TAC) §232.21 (b) & (c).
At the conclusion of each activity offered for CPE credit, the provider or sponsor must provide each educator in attendance written documentation listing, at a minimum, the following:
-
the provider's name and provider number
-
the educator's name
-
the date and content of the activity
-
the number of clock hours that count toward satisfying CPE requirements
This information may be provided in paper or electronic format.
All providers must maintain a log of CPE activities conducted that includes a list of attendees, the date and content of the activity, and the number of clock hours that count toward satisfying CPE requirements.
